Elementary Program

Overview

Lower elementary students are 6 – 9 years old and upper elementary students are 9 – 12 years old.

The child who began to bloom during his final primary year blossoms fully and flourishes at the elementary level, where the emphasis is on learning how to learn rather than pushing all children to learn all the same things at the same time.

Like its primary counterpart, an elementary level class:

  • Is a multi-age program.
  • Takes place in a prepared environment that is organized into work areas by subject.
  • Permits children to move around the room freely and work without interruption until they feel finished with the activity they’ve chosen.
  • Uses specially designed, AMI-approved materials that introduce and reinforce new skills and concepts.

Covering the Basics

From age six onward, children in our elementary program make plans with their directress to achieve certain educational goals (based on state curriculum guidelines) by the end of the school year. The directress prepares work areas, stocking them with materials and activities that the children will use to accomplish their objectives; they use these at their own pace and in the order they choose.

In addition to pursuing specific curriculum goals, children work, individually or in small groups, on a wide variety of projects that spark their curiosity, challenge their thinking, and incorporate many different subject areas. Children produce timelines, build models, and create costumes to go with their projects. They compile and bind books of their writing or artwork, tend gardens, conduct science experiments, write and put on plays, re-enact historic events and more. By the end of any project, each child will have developed not only a thorough knowledge of a particular topic but also a multitude of new skills, abilities, and ideas.

Going Out

A Montessori education extends beyond the classroom. Children go out to libraries, museums, local businesses, and arts performances. Through these outings, which they plan and organize themselves, children discover new resources and meet different people. They also go out to perform community service, such as collecting and delivering non-perishable food items for the food pantry at Lunch Break in Red Bank or helping younger children with homework at area after-school
programs.
