Primary Program

Primary Program

Overview

Young children are hands-on learners. Their attention is captured through meaningful, creative, easily manipulated materials. They are drawn to activities with movements that they can imitate easily and pursue independently. Our primary classroom offers endless opportunities to learn.

Children enter our primary class at 2 ½ – 3 years of age and continue through the year following their 5th birthday. This gives them three full years to explore, learn and grow in a program designed for their natural tendencies and, as referred to by Dr Montessori, their “absorbent minds.”

Children in this 2 ½ – 6 years old age group have a remarkable ability to automatically and effortlessly soak up information. They also become ready to master new skills or ideas at certain specific points in their development. Our directresses guide primary class children through these sensitive periods, using materials specifically developed for these tasks.

The Primary Classroom

The primary classroom is organized into four work areas. Children move freely from one area to another with no limit placed on how long they can work on a chosen task.

Montessori Preschool children learn their phonics.
